Love Is In the Air

Happy Valentine's Day!  I hope you are all celebrating this day with love, laughter, and fair trade organic chocolate.  Make cool hearts like this with your own personal message at Candy Hearts

We celebrated with my son's school yesterday.  He made the Valentine's we ordered.  They even came with soy crayons to use!

And I saw this tip for teacher's gifts over at The Smith Family.  I love it because it reuses a glass jar and is simple and easy to make at home.  We are not very crafty around here, but we gave it a shot and I think they turned out pretty well.
My husband and I will go out to a movie tonight (any good suggestions?) thanks to a well planned visit from Grandma but we try to keep our presents simple, thoughtful, and handmade.  We find that something we made each other always means much more than a store bought gift and supports our goals of saving money and consuming less.  I opened my closet today to find this:

And I have used this journal for the past four years.  I pick it up every year about 2 weeks before Valentine's Day and write a little each day about my love for him.  I recount things that happen during our day or week and how I am reminded that I love him.  He enjoys reading it each year and it's fun to see how our love has grown.

What are you doing to show your love today?  For yourself?  For others?  Do you have any great Valentine's Day traditions?

Happy Valentine's Day, Willo ... and thanks for stopping by my page and peeking at my kitchen. It's a beautiful sunny day in central California, after lots of cold rain earlier in the week and even early this morning.

Your valentine's gifts are perfect. My husband Ray and I don't exchange gifts on Valentine's Day, and we've only gone out to dinner that night once in 25 years of marriage, when I was pregnant with our first child. We prefer to stay home and make a nice dinner for just the 2 of us, and maybe watch a movie or just hang out together.

This may sound strange, but Ray tells everyone that Valentine's Day -- and New Year's Eve -- are for amateurs. Not the holidays themselves, but the huge fuss, commercialism, and crowded overpriced restaurants. We both love to cook, and would much rather eat a wonderful meal at home instead of surrounded by strangers who feel obligated to "show their love" by buying into the Hallmark hype :o)

I love roses, and Ray brings them home often, but always as a surprise. There are so many ways to celebrate our relationship all year long.

And this Valentine's Day? Ray is on call this weekend (he's a clinical pharmacist), so he's already spent several hours at the pharmacy for his hospice patients. Tonight he'll cook rack of lamb (if he's not back at the pharmacy) and we'll watch a movie. I'm spending my day wallpapering the breakfast room, so we can start to put things back together and use that room again, instead of eating on TV trays all the time.

Victoria :o)

Happy Valentine's Day. We don't really have traditions, but my husband did buy me some red tulips.

Stopping by from SITS.

Tonight (well this afternoon) we made some Shrimp Chili that we are going to have for dinner.

Not really any traditions, other than we pretty much cook together and make our evening just us (after the kiddos go to sleep).

Hope you had a great day!

valentine's day as the day of love has only been "imported" here in the last couple of years, but we have a folk saying "saint valentine has the keys to the roots", meaning that on his day spring finally arrives. i like to think his keys unlock the love in our hearts, too.

you exchanged great gifts. i love the idea of keeping a journal like yours, i might do one for my husband and another two for each of my kids. maybe each person in my life should get one.
